You can casually play PvE. I can login for an hour and do some quests or farm alittle or just chit chat in one of the main towns.

The same really goes for RA, which is why it is the favored beginning arena and arena for PvErs.

How much PvP could the same person do in an hour? Well they could HOPE to have 8 people on to GvG, spend 20-30 minutes probably finally getting everyone to hall and setup, then have time for 1-2 matches max both of which are likely to just be suicide runs against a decent ranked team because of your lack of experience and practice GvGing. For HA you can have 6 people on (soon to be 8 again) or pick up random people and get slaughtered by the Zaishen or spend the time hand picking people and go for 1 run max before having to leave.

GW has long suffered from not being casual enough to appeal to a majority on the PvP side - Unlike the "login and go" of alot of types of games, GW requires large party numbers, setup times, and etc that keeps the average joe blow from competitively fighting.

My views on this matter is alike GourangaPizza's. PvE is more laid back. In PvP-you have to concentrate and be organized to do well. Take this for an example;

A person has had the game for 2 months-has just finished Prophecies on his first character. Player goes to RA. Player wins and unlocks Heroes Ascent. Player tries to join a PuG. Player and team fail miserably against a organized opponent. Player's team call player a noob and puts his RL morale down-discouraging him from doing future HA/PvP all together.

I think that you see many fewer PvPer's because nowadays you have to be very organized to succeed..with the exception of RA(Which is also why it is very popular with usually about 5-10 districts)

Unlike PvE alot of missions are completable with PuG's-..and you only really need to organize for bonuses/masters.

Basically many players don't like to jump straight from 'laid back' to 'hardcore'-so the majority of the small majority of PvP'ers you see in HA are usually people who are hardcore/focusing on becoming hardcore PvPer's.

Thanks
Ashleigh

I agree that the difficulty of casual PvP is why so many people PvE. Most people don't like to put in a huge amount of effort to lose more than half of the time.

For myself, I PvE when:

1) A new chapter comes out -- I like the new missions and storyline. Twice through the game wears this out tho.
2) When a friend needs help or when a friend wants me to play a difficult area with an organzied team (doa).
3) When I want to farm a new title -- heros only usually.

I probably spend 10% of my time or less in PvE, except during the week when new chapters come out when I spend 90% of my time pveing.

Right after the Searing, my hunting partner headed for Ascalon Arena, both of us level 7. What should have been fun was totally ruined by people insulting us because we were there with our noob skills and noob armour, and had dared set foot into an arena without first paying someone to run us to Drok's to get high level equipment. Eventually we just turned off all chat but left at the end of the battle.

Compare that experience to following a storyline, exploring the map, partaking in quests, completing missions, enjoying the scenery, etc., etc. We've never had to grind or farm and have always had enough for our next armour, skills or whatever else we wanted.

After playing for 3,700 hours we still have plenty left that we want to do, so the question isn't what the point is of PvE, but rather why anyone would choose to go to an arena when it's so much more pleasant outdoors.

To be honest I fnd much more satisfaction in pissing off Glint by snatching her egg and then laying the smack down on her than any intereaction win or lose agains a group of humans. To me PvE is too much like trying to farm a group of enemies that always have different skills. I'd prefer to galavant across the country-side defeating evil in the name of good.

Some people like apples, some people like roasted pork slatherd in BBQ sause...

hey thanks for the replies, im glad this was moved from Questions and answers

but still... there were so many of the people who responded to my findings on PvE with flames about PvP, and some posts kindof soured my PvP experience, so i simply skipped over reading the ones that started with "BECAUSE HA IS REPETITIVE AND TEH SUXOR AND BLABLABLALBA"

i guess i kindof understand why people pve, because its like a traditional rpg. I liked those too but i guess Guild Wars just seemed a little dry to me compared to console rpgs and stuff ( and people said they play PvE because they don't have enough time to play PvP, lol i stopped PvE because i thought it was more time consuming than PvP, which isn't bad at all if you don't immerse yourself in the metagame and you remember its just a game- i may seem very much like a n00b but if i want quick action and am short of time, i try to find some random group in TA or even stop by in random arenas )

More people PvE than PvP because PvE is a more light-hearted experience that doesn't take as much skill to pull off effectively. Personally I can't stand any online gaming experience that is not competitive, so when I PvEd for about an hour and unlocked a few skills, I was straight over to RA learning the ropes.

why pve? my question would be why does anyone pvp....but thats another thread.

I pve because I like to play a game, not beat the crapp out of other people....I get no satisfaction out of killing off people in pvp---and I am not very good, nor really care that the warrior was able to beat my ele to a pulp (gee he has al100 vs al60). Nor waiting for hours to play for what 10minutes???

In pve there are quests and rewards for quests....there is gold to be found, cool weapons to modify, neat armor to be bought and its materials to get (those vabbi gems for one)....You can start these immediately --no waiting for a group of humans to form a leet team. There are the missions, finishing the game and seeing the end credits (ok, who really cares about the end credits but finishing the game gives a feeling of accomplishment).....and when you get to level 20 you can go back and bash the level 6 char solo! (hey I played an ele for the first 4months of the game and the char gave me lots of grief--so it was payback time!)

so there are tons of reasons to pve.....there are tons of reasons to pvp (I still dont get pvp really, but then I am a 40yearold woman and still dont get into sports either)......

I am happy that anet made this game both to try and let peoples of both minds share a great game.

Frustration.

interaction with wanna-be-l33t people, interaction with l33t people.
loosing because some one else screws up, loosing because you screw up, not being able to ejoy victory because then you will screw up and loose.
not being able to experiment, being forced to build you dont like.

Cosyfiep...I love you :P That's some really nice points on why to PvE

*Logs on and gets questing*

Hehe..I love PvP still though You said about completing the game gives you a sense of accomplishment. In my guild, and I bet many others, winning a GvG match or earning Halls is also a great sense of achievement...I mean, who gets to see you finishing the game except your party? Anyone can observe your Halls victory

Great points you made though.

Great post, that sums up a lot of my feelings on the subject. Like I said, I prefer PvP but I end up doing a lot more PvE because of the very same points you raise. But don't get me wrong- I'm not complaining, because I don't think there is a way to "fix" those issues.

For it me it's simple:

I PVP at my job all day long trying to work with internal and external customers in the REAL world.

The last thing in the WORLD I want to do when I login to GWars is PVP someone.

Leave the "Boom! Headshot! Boom! Headshot!" for someone else.

Well. I personally enjoy PvE more...It seems to give me much more things to do, and instead of pressing 'I' and choosing my armor and the colors, and the weapons, I can go out and get to whatever town i need for the armor I choose. It seems to keep me occupied and it keeps me from bashing my head into my laptop screen. To put it simply, I don't enjoy PvP in Guild Wars at all...and no its not just Guild Wars itself, I don't like the people i have encountered in PvP. Some of them can make it very un-enjoyable.

And plus, I don't like to go out and kill other players characters. I just don't. I enjoy killing monsters, beacuse to me that is what a game is about. It doesn't mean it is what it is for everyone, It's just how i feel.

and I don't like following builds. at all. I make up most all of my builds unless they are some type of farming build, and a few rare others. I like to be able to play and experiment with different skills instead of going out and getting owned beacuse I didn't bring such and such a skill.

Please remove heroes from PvE and throw them back in HA please. Heroes are dumbing down the PvE experience. HAers need heroes more so they can get fame easily.
That is actually not a bad idea. The truth of the matter is that most don't do it because of their guild situation as they maybe in small or big guild. The small guilds don't have enough players to get into PvP which is really GvG then the big guilds can't get organized because of this and that unless you really are PvP guild that does only GvG and TA.
When it come to HA and RA well that hasn't been the same since beta as most just have FoTM builds an to get in to a group well you might wait while but heros can't help this out.The reason I don't I have a small guild that can't GvG.
The only part of PvE I don't like is the repetition of it having to do 1 quest than 1 mission then 1 quest and 1 mission over and over.I would prefer to skip some of those like in Good ole Prophecies.

While there are certainly issues with getting a GW PvP game organized, bottom line is Guild Wars is an RPG. There aren't any major pure PvP RPGs (yet, one or two are coming) compared to a good number of very successful PvP-only (bots optional) FPSes and RTSes.

Of course, one of the things that makes an RPG an RPG is some amount of long-term character progression, which hardcore GW PvPers have tended to whine about, and this element is usually minimal or lacking in FPS/RTS.

For me, it's the character exploring, and completing the storyline, while developing within the world.

Seeing the hero/henchies/NPC's quips and comments makes me laugh at times.

I can stop after a mob to take a bathroom break.
